Precinct Information

The Most Important Hour You can Spend

   March 23, 2010 - 7:00 p.m.

The most important hour you can spend serving your community will be at your Precinct Caucus on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.  At the caucuses precinct members talk about current issues and discuss which Republican candidates they want to support.  They learn about county party programs and other opportunities to get involved in local politics.  The caucuses are where county and state delegates and precinct officers are elected.  Ususally they are chosen by less than fifteen people who live in your voting district.

Why Are Delegates and Precinct Officers So Important?

County and state delegates represent their precincts:  county delegates vote at the Iron County Republican Convention on April 17, 2010 for county candidates, and the state delegates vote at the State Republican Convention on May 8, 2010 for state delegates.  Their votes will decide which candidates will go to the primary elections in June.  Usually there will be two candidates from the party to vote for in the primary election.  But by party rule, if a party candidate receives 60% or more of the delegate vote at the the convention, that person is the sole party nominee.

The state delegates choose who will be the Republican Party's nominee for the US Senate, US Representative, Governor, Attorney General and all other state elected positions.  If state legislative or senate districts cross county lines then the State delegates will nominate those candidates.  They also elect the delegates who will represent Utah at the National Republican Convention to choose the Republican nominee for the President of the United States.

If districts do not cross county lines, county delegates vote in the county conventions to decide who will be the party's candidate for the Utah House of Representatives and the Utah Senate.

The precinct chairman, vice chairman, secretary and treasurer conduct the caucuses and other precent business.  They keep the precinct members informed and help the county party organize voter registration, get-out-the-vote programs and assist Republican campaigns.

You Can Make the Difference

Attending the precinct caucus is the most important step you can take in the political process.  If we want to elect those who will work for our freedoms and represent our community values, we must join our friends and neighbors and attend our precinct caucus.

As county and state delegates, we can work with our party candidates and have a great deal of influence on their commitment to specific issues.  Or we can encourage people to become candidates and elect those who will fight to preserve our freedoms.
