Meet Steve Bryant for Cedar City Council 2011

Would you support an ordinance to protect individuals from being discriminated against by property owners?

I am in favor of property owners being able to use their property in the way that they see fit. The market will ensure that needs are met. Whenever the government interferes in the market it causes problems such as shortages and higher prices. Capitalism works.

Would you support an ordinance to protect private property owners from discriminatory measures pushed by special interest groups or Federal mandate?

Yes

How do you feel about impact fees?

Impact fees are not necessary. Construction and related industries are major employers in our area. Impact fees are a hindrance to growth for both commercial and residential construction. Growth is healthy for our city. Hook-up and usage fees should cover the revenue required for the city to provide necessary services. Every other City in Iron County has lower impact fees than Cedar City. What does this say to someone looking to build a new home or commercial building? Every concerned citizen of Cedar City should research this issue and show up to the City Council meetings to let your feelings be known.

How do planning and zoning affect the property rights of property owners?

No response.

Why are you running for City Council?

If elected, I will draw on my professional experience and education to thoroughly study and understand the issues. In addition to a background in finance and business management, I have been politically active locally, serving as a State and County Delegate and in my Precinct leadership for the Republican Party. We need to ensure that Cedar City is on solid ground financially and does not make any additional mistakes that will cost the citizens millions of dollars in future taxes such as the Aquatics Center and the proposed Lake Powell Pipeline. Governments at all levels spend too much. When times are good and tax revenues are going up, they assume that it will continue forever. It’s easier during tough times to say we need to cut spending, but we need representatives in office who will ensure that future city spending is prudent. Each tax dollar is sacred and needs to be treated as such.

Have you read the Ordinances of your City?

No

Are there any concerns with the ordinances?

I cannot say that I have read every ordinance on the books for Cedar City. I have read many of them and they are generally overly restrictive and in many cases unenforceable. The sign ordinance, for instance, is 23 pages long. In general property owners should be able to do what they like with their own property as long as the use doesn't infringe on the rights of others to enjoy their own property.

How do you feel about the Lake Powell Pipeline?

It is the most expensive solution to the problem of supplying adequate water to the residents of Cedar City. At this point, I am against the Lake Powell Pipeline and am in favor of exploring other water resources.

How do you feel about the Cedar City Aquatic Center?

I voted against the bond to fund the construction of the aquatic center and am very concerned about the cost to operate and maintain the project. Going forward we need to ensure that it is operated in the most efficient way possible to lessen the negative financial impact on the residents of Cedar City.

What is the best way you feel we can attract businesses to the city?

Reduce taxes, fees and restrictions; eliminating unnecessary, unenforceable and overly restrictive ordinances and significantly reducing impact fees on new construction with the goal to eliminate them. Cedar City has what every company is looking for – great people who work hard. The City government needs to ensure they are not doing anything to discourage companies from coming here or companies that are already here from expanding and adding new jobs. Lower taxes across the board are needed. Cedar City should be the lowest taxed, best managed City in Utah. If elected, I will do my best to help make that happen.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

If elected I will provide strong conservative leadership on the Cedar City Council. I will take every vote seriously and will put in the time and effort necessary to be prepared to make the best decisions for Cedar City.
